Task 2 - Document A Day
For this task, we were asked to choose one aspect of our everyday interactions with the world and observe it closely for a day. We then had to collect data using methods such as photography, counting, sketching, or recording, analyse the information to identify patterns or interesting findings, and present the results in a clear and engaging visual format.
Idea & Process
I’ve always been fascinated by the small things people do consciously and unconsciously, so I decided to observe what people naturally do with their hands while moving through public spaces. I first tried observing people outside, but documenting their hands was difficult because people moved quickly and taking photos without consent didn’t feel appropriate.
Instead, I watched a public walking-tour video through busy areas of Sydney. This allowed me to pause, observe each person more carefully, take screenshots, and record different hand behaviours. I then counted and grouped these behaviours into categories to look for patterns.
